May 21, 2020:
Dear Camp Woolman Families,
Thank you for your patience and support as we have discerned the best way to move forward with camp this summer. We have felt the strength and love of the Woolman community now more than ever, and we send all our strength and love back out to you. Perhaps that is the greatest message of these times - we need one another.
Which makes our decision even more difficult. After exploring multiple options, thoroughly investigating the new Guidelines and Phases for Reopening issued by Nevada County, and reviewing the CDC guidelines and the American Camp Association guidelines, we have had to face the impossibility of holding camp safely and within government restrictions. Therefore, it is with heavy hearts that we must inform you that all Camp Woolman programming for summer 2020 has been canceled.
On behalf of the entire camp staff, we want to express our sadness that this has to be the outcome. Camp Woolman is a second home for many of our staff members, as it is for many of your children. Your campers have taught us the life-changing magic of accepting and celebrating others for just being themselves, and the beauty of letting your inner-self come forward. Many of your children have yet to have the chance to join us on campus, and we sincerely hope that we will be able to welcome them to this powerful, loving, silly, community next year.
We have always said that the true magic of Camp Woolman is that our program is built on connection. We do not need pools, tennis courts, climbing walls, or other luxuries; what we have is community. We have campers and counselors that can create games and songs on the spot, and turn any moment into a lifelong memory. While we can hardly imagine all of the challenges you and your children are facing right now, we know that Woolman campers are incredibly loving, resilient, optimistic beings who can make the best of any situation - and we can’t wait to hear their stories and see their growth next summer.
Here’s the nitty-gritty of how to manage your 2020 payments and 2021 reservations:
Tuition Rollovers & Refunds
1. Deposits: Your nonrefundable $200 deposit will automatically be rolled over to the Summer 2021 season
2. Tuition and Fees: You may designate all or part of your remaining tuition and fees to the following options:
A full refund, less the deposit above,
Your camper’s 2021 tuition
- A tax-deductible donation toward the long-term sustainability of Woolman, or
- Some sort of combination of refund, 2021 tuition, and/or donation
Please use this form to indicate your preferences: Refund, Donate, or Roll-Over Form.
Please keep in mind that we are not currently set up to issue mass refunds. After evaluating how many refunds are being requested in total, we will create a plan for issuing these refunds throughout the next several months - we will do our best to get everyone their requested refunds as soon as we can, but we ask for patience and understanding as we navigate this unprecedented process and its fiscal impacts on Woolman.
If you are unsure of how much tuition you have paid thus far, please refer to your Active Works account or email Sonja at
Can you help Woolman?
Beyond canceling Camp, Woolman has had to postpone all campus events that our organization relies on for meeting operating expenses. We are a small non-profit that has been dedicated for over 60 years to creating educational and experiential programming for youth, and this pandemic is the largest storm we have ever had to weather. For the past couple of months several of our camp staff have volunteered countless hours to keep Woolman running - because Woolman is our family. Woolman is a guiding light and safe space for so many campers and staff who have experienced the love and acceptance that radiate from every corner of campus, and we are fighting hard every day to survive this enormous challenge. We cannot do it alone.
Woolman still has many expenditures to cover to ensure our stability for hosting Camp in Summer 2021. As a non-profit we fundraise with donors, our community, and the general public, but the majority of our revenue comes from camper fees. We hope you will consider turning some or all of your tuition into a tax-deductible donation. Any amount can make a huge difference for us and our ability to serve your campers next summer.
This is Good Luck and Not Goodbye
At the conclusion of each camp session, as we gather for our Candle Light Ceremony, we sing these words to each other, holding the beacon for us all to return to this place we love. We hope to stay in touch as much as possible throughout this next year, please check out our website and social media pages (Facebook & Instagram) for photos and videos of some Woolman staff who will be using this summer to work on campus projects and dreaming up big plans for Summer 2021. Our hearts go out to all of you and your families, and we are counting down the days until we can see you again. Please reach out anytime!
